It's a great charity, children's miracle network. People tell you that as a child there are infinite possibilities, but some kids don't get that opportunity. Miracle network help countless sick kids, and give them a chance to reach those possibilities.

November!
Its almost November so you know what that means!
For those of you who do not know, Extra life is a yearly event that thousands of teams take part in where they play games - be they computer, board or role playing - for twenty four hours straight to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network, a charity devoted to helping kids and Children’s hospitals.
There is a catch though. As hard as Extra Life has tried to work with international hospitals they have as yet been unable to penetrate US legal code, so all proceeds go to American hospitals. That said we non US citizens can still help, and it can still help people from all over the world.
With this in mind I will be supporting Boston Children's Hospital, a specialist hospital that children the world over are taken to for life saving treatments.
All of the donations I raise will go directly to help the international patients at Boston Children's Hospital.

Nanowrimo is coming up! That's National Novel Writing Month. November where we buckle down and write a 50k word novel in a month. A novella really.
I've managed it every year since I started but this year I'm going to do something a little better. Instead of writing a n abstract story that I might use one day; whatever I have at the end of Nanowrimo I'm going to publish on Kindle.
That's right! Publish.
On Kindle.
Publish on Kindle.
So it'll be available to own for a comparatively low price in December! Ready for Christmas day Kindle purchases!

Nano-life-competition
So Extra Life went well. I raised $122 just for playing computer games for 24 hours. I did GTA for 21 of the hours but then I gave up, it was just too buggy for a 24 hours session. I couldn't get into any of the game sessions, no death matches, no races, nothing.
I'm sure it'd be awesome if I could actually do it, but I was stuck with just the open world, which makes it massively difficult to earn money.
The second part of the event I played Payday 2, an awesome criminal game where players try to steal from banks and shops. It's actually really fun, especially when you play with friends and people you know.
Which leads me nicely onto something I mentioned on Twitter a week ago.
I know that there aren't many people reading my work, but I figured on the off chance that there IS anyone, and they're artistic;
I am now running a fan art competition. All you need to do is draw/paint/build something based on something from either one of my books or my short stories or just something you're read here.
E-mail a picture of your artwork with your name (or twitter handle/deviantart handle) and e-mail address to a Competitions@minority-opinions.com for a chance to win a copy of Payday 2!
Random prize I know, but it's cool!

The first book really just showed how awesome hunter is and what he was all about, now I'm focussing more on the case and his flaws. Should be good :)

Nanowrimo prep
So last year I wrote that story about the secret agent on the Gallidar space station, I only got about half way through it and never finished it. It was okay, but nothing spectacular. I think the problem was that I was trying all new stuff and didnt really have any idea where I was going or what I was doing. I was just coming up with ideas as I went and throwing them all in.
This time I'm not just jumping in the deep end with nothing but a computer and the internet. This time I'm going in with a plan.
So I started by putting together a spreadsheet time line with everything that happens to every relevant character between the beginning of the story and the end, but that was way too complex for the first part. I didn't even know what the main points - like the villain being at war with his father - were let alone the unimportant points - like Amelia getting bullied at school by teachers - so how was I goign to write out a full, comprehensive spreadsheet of what happens? I wasn't.
Next I moved onto writing out a simplified time line, just detailign the most relevant events, but again I stumbled when I realised I didn't really know what the story is about. All I have is 'master thief tries to steal work of art, but is beaten to it, and fingered as the suspect, she helps Hunter catch the real culprets.' its a great premise, but thats it.
Now i will try and come up with a little more.
How are you guys all doing on your nanowrimo prep? are you goign for a traditional Nano story or doing somethign a little diffrent? I know that Liz is taking the month to do some artwork instead of drawing, so what about you? what are you doing?

That time of year
So it's that time of year again where events converge upon one another. Nanowrimo and Extra Life exploding onto the scenes at the beginning of November.

As anyone who's been reading this blog for a significant period of time can attest Nanowrimo is the month long writing experiment 'national novel writing month' where people attempt to write a 50k word story in a month. Last year I got to 75k, and this year i'm aiming for 100k. Last year I wrote a science fiction fantasy spy novel set in the far future of my Hunter books. this year I'm going to be a little more conservative and try and write the sequel to book one of Hunter.
This will start on the first of November and end on the thirtieth, meaning that if I want to get to 100k I have to write at least 3334 words a day or 23334 words a week, its a feat that will stretch me, especially while simultaneously working and living my life, but I hope to achieve it.
I would be very interested in comments from anyone else trying to do the nanowrimo challenge.

This year I hope to play Grand Theft Auto Online for the entire length, to see just how far I can get in a single play through.

Not so secret
I always find it odd when I meet another person of my age that's into the same things that I'm embarrassed to be into.
Whether its anime, or magic the gathering, or comic books, or in this case, pokemon games, it always throws me when someone asks if I like it and they aren't looking to make fun of me.
In the case of pokemon games, a new one came out on Saturday and I though it might be fun to talk about it, then Liz said we'd do a podcast about it and I couldn't do a blog post so instead I thought I'd talk about how silly it is to be insecure about liking things that you like (except my little pony, you bronies need to stop... now... okay, even the bronies can have their horses)
For years I've quietly enjoyed the things that I like but am embarrassed to like. Collected models, played games, watched movies, silently afraid that someone might find out that I have sci-fi statues or play pokemon games or watch anime films and movies.
But why do I do this? Because in our society it's frowned upon? No, people might find it odd but it's not frowned upon. Because people find it odd? maybe, but why should I care? the sorts of people who find it odd, and that it being odd matters to are not the same people that I would interact with.
But I think that's it, me, and people like me are self conscious about that sort of thing, about being considered weird.
But here's the truth: we are weird, and that's great. I'd rather be weird than identical to everyone else, so why should I care what other people think? Why should you?
Since getting this game, since starting to play it I've bumped into a surprising number of people who don't necessarily fit the games target audience, who play it anyway. They don't care, so why should I?
I guess my point is that you shouldn't hide who you are. You shouldn't pretend to be something you're not for the sake of others because if they care that little about you that something like pokemon is going to stop the friendship then it wasn't a great friendship to begin with.
Love what you love, do what you do, have fun where you can have fun. Life is too short to pretend not to love the things you love so that a few people will dislike you a little bit less.

24 hours of life
So extra-life was this previous weekend. I earned 103% of my goal in the 60 hours between deciding to do the event and the event completing.
Overall $1.91million has been raised so far this year, though donations are still pouring in.
If you feel the charitable spirit you can still donate here.
During the event I played XCOM for an hour, Borderlands 2 for 9 hours, Sleeping Dogs for 2 hours, Audiosurf for an hour, a second session of Borderlands 2 for 10 hours 30 minutes, and a second session of Audiosurf for 30 minutes.
One thing I did while I was going through it was take a photo every hour, and here they are:

Extra-Life
The more perceptive of you may have noticed that last night on Twitter I announced that I am taking part in the Extra Life event.
It's been a weird one. First I said I wasn't taking part cos I was away, then I said I wasn't away but I would only be available to help others through the night, now I'm saying I'm taking part.
It seemed a little stupid for me to do all the work but not reap the benefits (helping people IS a benefit aparently, I looked it up in the moral people's hand book, who knew, right?). I figured I'd join my friends team and take part.
So you all guessed what I'm gonna say, it's pretty freaking obvious, right? Ok, I'm gonna just get it out of the way;
I'm currently in last place on the list of my team... Please PLEASE give me your money. I swear it's going to a good cause!

Extra Life
SO!
A few weeks ago I explained to y'all about Extra life, the childrens charity. I explained that while I would love to play games for 24 hours straight I just don't have the time, so instead I implored you to give to my friend.
Well now all my plans have fallen through so I'll be helping out.
I'm not personally raising charity, its a little late for that what with it being this weekend, but I will be helping those who need it to stay awake.
I'll be online playing from 2pm GMT Saturday the 20th until 2pm GMT Sunday the 20th.
If anyone out there needs my help to stay awake, or just wants to play with me I'll be chilling on steam (dante6083), so give me a shout if you need aid. I wont stop playing with others to play with you, but I might be free when you need me.
Hopefully we'll be able to do some real good by playing computer games and all those people out there will know where to stick their anti-gaming rhetoric!
Or people will say that we were just looking for another excuse to game and they still don't like us. Either way we'll have helped some kids and played some games. Both worthy goals.

1-up
Hey, just a quickie today, some friends of mine (ok, a friend of mine and all her friends) are taking part in "Extra-Life". It's a 24 hour computer games marathon for 'childrens miracle network hospital', who provide comfort, treatment and hope to millions of sick kids.
If you want to donate and help save kids lives then go here, pick one of the team members (my friend is the only girl on the team) and donate as much as you can. Even as little as $1 is a great help and remember all proceeds go to charity.
If you can't give any money but you've got the 20th of October free (third Saturday of the month) then sign up and start getting sponsors, if you can't do that either then spread the word, the more people who know, the more people who can help.
Now I know what you're thinking 'James, you awesome genius of a man you. You love computer games, why aren't you playing a 24 hour gaming binge to help kids? Is that genius of yours so fickle that you don't care? Are you a child hater? Huh? Huh?'
First of all, the mixture of overzealous compliments and un-founded aggression is very scary, please stop. Second; the truth is, sadly, I found out too late and already have plans for that weekend. I'll be doing it next year, but as compensation I hope that the donation I made to my friend's extra life session will go some way to persuade you all that I'm not a baby hating crazy person with no love for anything but his stories.
After all, it's best if you aren't aware of that.
